Recap: Bobby's Creating Comic Books Library Presentation

I had a blast with the Creating Comics presentation at the Winder Public Library today. The crowd was small, but enthusiastic despite the sweltering temperatures since the AC wasn't working. Still, we had a great discussion and talked comics for a couple hours.

Convention Review: Memphis Comic And Fantasy Convention

On November 5 - 6, 2010 I was proud to be one of the guests on hand for the first Memphis Comic And Fantasy Convention in Memphis Tennessee. First year conventions are always a mystery when deciding whether to do the show as a guest. Like most first time shows, this one had a few first year bugs to work out, but they were minor. The guest list was impressive and I had a wonderful time. The set up was well done although I would have preferred to see more events happening in the main hall of the Cook Convention Center. Along with the open main hall there was a dealer's room, artist alley (where I was set up), and a panel room.

The convention was very family friendly and I was excited to see a lot of kids on hand. Which brings me to the highlight of my weekend. The show opened to the public at 1 p.m. on Friday. However, before that, from 10 a.m. until 1 p.m. the convention, in conjunction with local schools brought kids to the show on a field trip. There were Q & A sessions with actors, artists, and writers as well as demonstrations, cartoons, video games, movies, and costumed heroes and villains all signing autographs. I was excited to see all of the kids on hand. Not only was their enthusiasm infectious, but it was great to see them looking over the comic books and art. If I had known about the field trip beforehand I would have made sure to bring some Life In The Faster Lane cards to pass out. Still, everyone who stopped by my table got a Lance Star: Sky Ranger postcard, which the kids seemed to enjoy.

Guests for the weekend included Star Trek: The Next Generation's Denise Crosby, wrestler and comic book artist Jerry (The King) Lawler, Actor and comic book artist Arne Starr, along with artists such as Billy Tackett, Martheus Wade, Gary Friedrich, Mitch Brietwiester, Jason Craig, Mitch Foust, and more. Also on hand were writers like myself, Sean Taylor, Allan Gilbreath, Kimberly Richardson, and more.

I had a great time at the first Memphis Comic And Fantasy Convention. I certainly hope there is a second show in 2011 and that they invite me back again. You can learn more about the convention at http://www.memphiscfc.com.

I was a guest at the Atlanta Comics Expo on Feb. 8-10 and I finally posted a short recap and photos from the show for those who might be interested.

The charity event was an Iron Munny auction for Reading Is Fundamental. You'll see some very creative Munnys on display.

I was on a panel on Friday with artists Michael Golden,Steve Scott, Andy Smith, and fellow writer/artist Greg Carter. It was a fun panel.

I also managed to wrangle in a Life In The Faster Lane sketch or two.
This is a sketch I did of R.O. for my table-mate at 2007's ACE, Sean Taylor. As luck would have it, our tables were next to one another this year as well so I finally thought to take a photo of the art.
Here's the sketch next to copies of Sean's Fishnet Angel series. R.O.'s punchline makes more sense now, doesn't it?
Now that Sean writes Gene Simmons' Dominatrix for IDW, I did a sketch for the 2008 show. That's an RO'ed (to coin a new phrase that will soon sweep the nation) version of an actual Dominatrix cover. If you haven't been reading this book, check it out. You'll enjoy it.

The Munny came with a blank sticker that I just could not pass up taking the opportunity to draw as R.O. After seeing this I want to buy and paint a real R.O. Munny.

I'll be at Con Nooga in Chattanooga, TN on Feb. 22 - 24. Hopefully I'll get to do more sketches there.

Ye olde con sketch

One of the big thrills for me at a convention or book signing event is when someone asks for a sketch. It's doubly exciting because we writers are not often asked to doodle. With an artist you can ask for a sketch. It's harder to walk up to a writer and ask if they can write you something. My favorite is when they say, "Write something funny."

What follows are three such con sketches. These are the only three I have copies of to my knowledge. Who knows what lurks in the various CDs, disks, and nooks and crannies of my hard drive. I hope to add more later now that I have a decent digital camera. I can snap off a quick shot of the sketch.

Since Life In The Faster Lane is the only thing I draw these days, I usually sketch out an R.O. headshot. Sometimes, however, people come with theme books and I do what I can. I hope you enjoy these sketches and if you see me at a con, please stop by and ask for a sketch.

This was done for a theme book for Legends comic shop owner, Gordon Lee at the 2006 Dragon Con. I remember the date because I finally got smart and started adding them to my signatures. Tricky, huh? Gordon's sketch book had these famous lines from movies and asked for a sketch to fit the quote. I picked this one. That's R.O. sharing space with Top Cow's Renae Geerling's character, Puma Girl, a project I had been slated to write, but unfortunately fell through.
A few years back I did some sketches for a fan using stick figures, similar to what is seen above. To my suprise, severl people watching me draw them thought they were cute so I ended up doing several. I still get the occasional request for one. The image above was another Dragon Con 2006 sketch book with various themes. Actually, the owner of this book saw me drawing Gordon's image and liked it. The page I was given had a note that said, "draw whatever you want." Well, being the smart alec I am, well... you see the result above.

And here we go for another round of what I like to call Christmas In The Faster Lane.
And away we go...
Growing up, my Dad was always threatening to give us I.O.U.'s for Christmas. It never happened though. I guess Mrs. R.O. had soemthing to do with that. :)
Ironically enough, in reality this year I'm giving my brother, the real life inspiration for Mel Nudell, an I.O. U. because one of the items he wants doesn't come out until after Christmas. I guess art really does imitate life, huh?

A complete fabrication, but it does seem like something R.O. and Mel (not to mention their real life counterparts) might try.
Yep. R.O. said this one.
Every kid has probably thought of this one once or twice. Ha!
I got a big kick out of seeing one of my young cousins try to figure out where the batteries went on a toy that did not require batteries once. It was just too funny not to use.

Thanksgiving In The Faster Lane.

As we all settle in this week to celebrate Thanksgiving with our families, may we all take a moment to remember those people, places, and things that are important to us. In that regard, I would like to thank my family, Bobby, Margaret, and Wesley Nash (the real R.O., Honey, and Mel Nudell) for not only supporting me in my career and enduring the fun I poke at them in these strips, but for being the best family a guy could have. I love ya, guys.

I've added the customary commentary below each strip.

More classics

A few more classics from the early days, long before the strip was actually called Life In The Faster Lane. I have edited these somewhat fr their reprint here. I've touched up a few things and replaced the bad hand lettering with computer lettering. An, of course, I added the Life In The Faster Lane logo, which did not exist when these were originally created.

This first strip is from 1992 and is one of the earliest drawings of R.O. I had done. I thought the idea of him sleeping on the job was very funny at the time.

This second strip is from a year later, 1993. If memory serves (darned CRS) this was the start of the R.O./Mel war of the jokes. I thought the gag worked well, but the expression on Mel's face as he peeks around the open door in that 2nd panel really sells it. I only did a handful of strips with more than one panel. While they can work, I felt that the Life In The Faster Lane strips worked so much better as single panel gags and have stuck with that formula to this day.

Another two panel gag, this time from 1994. This is more slapstick and really never clicked for me. I never really drew that second panel to my satisfaction.

These are some of the earliest drawings of R.O. You'll notice the character had not quite yet melded into his current look. He was a little more cartoony looking. Also, I was heavy into using China Markers at the time for shading. While the effect looked great on paper, it did not reproduce well in print.

I'll just let these strips speak for themselves.

They're racing at the Atlanta Motor Speedway this weekend and R.O. can't make it. I know this strip I came up with after a visit to the Daytona Motor Speedway in Florida can't make up for it, but it's a start. If you are racing this weekend, remember poor R.O. as he watches the race at home.

Slap it on a stick!

One of my earliest attempts at R.O. and Honey and their family dog, an idea I quickly jetisoned because we did not actually have a dog and I decided to stick as close to reality as possible. The slapstick is tough to do in a single panel format for me. I thought this was cute though. And look at how much R.O. has changed since these early days.

The one thing about this one that doesn't hold up to me is all the smoke. It never jelled for me. I guess drawing smoke just isn't my thing.

Just A Buck

Ah, what could have been. Imentioned in a previous post that the image was for a cover to a book that was unpublished. I felt I should expand on that a bit. At one time there was a plan in place for an imprint called Just A Buck Comics throuh Atomic Pop Art (check out APA at http://www.atomicpopart.net/).

Hopefully, this will not require a lot of explanation. Comics for $1. A good idea and I was proud to be asked by the editor at the time, Ron Fortier (who would later help launch my pulp writing career with an invitation to write a Lance Star story) to submit a Life In The Faster Lane proposal. Unfortunately, for a variety of reasons, the imprint did not last long, but I did have a few covers put together for consideration.

The covers and interiors for Just A Buck Comics [JABC] would have been black and white, but for fun I colored this piece and found great use for it in the Life In The Faster Lane store, which can be found at www.cafepress.com/fasterlane (sorry, can't resist an opportunity for a free plug). This image looks great on a mug, by the way.

Ah, one of my favorites. And it too makes a nice cover.

A first for me and for our esteemed R.O. happened during the Dragon Con convention in Atlanat, Georgia over Labor Day weekend. I was asked to sign and sketch on a young lady's corset... while she was wearing it.

The accompanying photo is of the drawing, which is on the right side of her back. The signature off to the left was one of my con neighbors, Joe Pekar. Turned out nicely, if I do say so myself.

AIN'T TECHNOLOGY GRAND?

In the course of the strip, R.O. had his fair share of run ins with technology. Now that my dad has actually discovered the world of email there are all new opportunities opening everyday.

Here are just a few of R.O.'s technological conundrums.

Surely I'm not the only person who has had to wait and wait and wait and wait and... uh, where were we? Oh yeah, waiting. Lets file this one under the heading of it's funny because it's true.
The real R.O. never said this one, but it sure sounds like something he would say.
Recyclo-Bob strikes again. I was running behind when the dreaded deadline snuck up on me originally. I had the idea, but not a lot of time to play around with design. Not only is R.O. a reink from the strip above, Mel is flipped and reinked from another strip as well. I know, I know. I'm shameless.
I admit this one's more about me than R.O., but since I'm not in the strip... And yes, I really do have the complete babylon 5 series DVDs. Even the new one that came out this week.

Another theme filled post with commentary on each.
Three strips with R.O. weilding his mighty mallet.
Okay, okay, so one of them is a baseball bat, but still...

Shades of Gallagher? You betcha. Lets just call this the sincerest form of flattery.
Haven't we all felt like this at least once in our lives, fellas? Come on, you know you have.
This is the first time this particular strip has ever been shown publicly. Originally, I drew this one for my Dad and his friends at work who worked in the body shop at the GM Doraville Plant, hence the "For the boys and girls at Doraville" tag. I really should have used a sledge hammer instead of a baseball bat. If I ever redraw this one I will make that change. For whatever reason this strip never made it into print.

Until now.

In 1992 when I drew this strip I was really using the China Markers for shading. While it looks good on the original it does not reproduce well. And what was the idea with that border? Yeesh! Oh, I added the logo since the scan did not have one.
And just for grins, here's how I would have done it today. Using the same image I cropped away the border and relettered it without the word balloon (I don't draw them well). All in all I think it works much better the new crop. What do you guys think? Any preference?

Been trying to lose some weight lately. Not an easy task, but I was reminded of some of R.O.'s opinions on the mere thought of dieting. Here's some wisdom from R.O. for you to injest.

This one's based on a true story. My father (the real R.O.) actually made this comment once.

Not really something I heard my Dad say, but there is truth in what he says.

This gag was originally used in a project I was working on that never materialized, which was a shame because I thought it was a good concept. Never one to let a good gag fall by the wayside, I recycled the gag into a Life In The Faster Lane strip. Recyclo-Bob strikes again. :)
